The Man of Wisdom

The renowned Islamic Mujtahid Imam Mohammad Ghazali refers in his world known treatise Kimiya-i S’adat that it is the indication of Allah’s love for a person that He opens the doors of wisdom to him. The quote suits the well known medieval scholar and Sufi Shiekh Baba Daud Khaki well. He was born in Srinagar in 928 Hijra corresponding to 1521 A.D. Tarikh Hassan mentions his place of birthas Kalashpora whereas a modern writer has identified it as Nowpora, adding that the present progeny of the great saint lived in the same locality. His father was Shiekh Hasan Ganai, a well known Khattat or scribe. G M D Sufi mentions that “the word Ganai comes from gan meaning a pen and the writer is, therefore, called the ganai as he uses the pen. The title of Ganai is believed to havebeen conferred, in Kashmir, on Baba Usamn Uchchap by BudShah, at whose burial the Sultan is said to have been present. Though Shiekh Daud lost his parents in the early childhood, yet he was destined to receive education from veteran religious luminaries like Allama Razi-ud Din, Mulla Baseer Khandabhawani, and Shams-ud-din Paul. Besides, by the grace of Allah, he had the qualities of head and heart. As a scholar he had no paralleland nobody could match his scholarship. It is interesting to note that most of the Sufis of the medieval times were first the religious luminaries before turning to Sufism. May be the instance of Khawja Nizamu-ud din Auliya(RA), Hazrat Mehboob ul Alam Shiekh Hamza Makhdoom(RA), Sheikh Yaqoob Sarfi (RA), or Shah Qasim Haqani (RA), almost all of them were well versed with thereligious tenets. This is in contrast to the modern scenario wherein some of those who claim to be Sufis but devoid of the knowledge of the shariat. These revered Sufis opened the doors of the house of Shariat, tread the path of Sufism (Tariaqat) to reach the zenith of the Maurfat, and they were successful in finding the ultimate Truth (Haqiqat). It was their experiences that led them to the vistas of Tasawuf. He was engaged in the royal services as the tutor of Sultan Nazak Shah’s son. He gave up services and became a murid (disciple) of Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom, who bestowed him a Khirqa in the Suharvardi Silsilah. He became of the seven glittering stars who groomed under the blessed tutelage of Shiekh Hamza Makhdoom. These sevenSufis besides Shikh Daud included Mir Hyder Tulmuli, Khawaj Hasan Qari, Khawaja Ishaq Qari, Mulla Ahmad Chagli. Besides he also sought the blessings of Syed Ahmad Kirmani (RA), Moulana Shiekh Ahmad Qari (RA), Baba Hardi Reshi. Soliciting the guidance of Mir Ismail Shami, he became enrolled in the Qadri Silsilah (Order). Sheikh Daud became instrumental in guiding thousands of Kashmiris to the right path. He has been rightly called the Imam Azami Sani. He guided the desirous ones to the stages of spiritual domain and had a number of disciples. The chief among them may be mentioned Haji Daud Balkhi, Mir Nazuk Qadri, Khawja Zain ud Din Rainawari. He travelled far and wide in the valley, relieving people of evils and myths. He breathed his last on 3rd of Safar 994 Hijra (1585 AD). Initially he was buried in Islamabad but later his mortal remains were shifted to the shrine of his Murshid Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom at Kohi Maran. Sheikh Daud had Khaki as his pen name though some assert that abdicating the royal riches and dashing the noble status along with his wishes to the ground (Khak) entitled him to be Khaki. As a profile writer he has to his credit many works of repute. These include Virdul Murideen, Dastoorul Salikeen, Qasida Jalalia, Qasida Lammiya,. His excellence in the religious scholarship may be judged from the fact that, in his Virdul Murideen, he has quoted from over two hundred religious works. Virdul Murideen, still recited in the Khanqhas and Masajid (mosques) of Kashmir on occasions, is a compilation of 1362 verses in honour (manaqib) of his spiritual preceptor HazratMehboob ul Alam Shiekh Hamza Makhdoom(RA). Dastoorul Salikeen is the commentary of the VirdulMurideen. Besides the significance these works carry in the religious and spiritual circles, they serve an important hagiographic source for the contemporary Kashmir. >>The recital handed over to me & the instruction for rememberance, The first as armour & spear, & other a sword with brilliance. >> He as per order of the guide of guides , the spiritual pivot of God, As taught bu Syed Jamal-ud-Din, led to Lord. >> He too with the instruction of the spiritual pivot of the world and his followers, Has became proud of the lineage among the instructors. >> By family lineage a Bukhari , by title Syed Jalal-ud-Din, The spiritual pivot of the world most famous has been! >>In possession an adept among all the saints, In bestowing & usurping very famous without taints. >> To prove his lineage , from the masoaleum of the sacred Prophet(salallahualaihewasallam), The reply 'my son' specially proved it. > Then from there for the guidance & instruction of India, sure, He got the permission from the prophet(sallahualaihewasallam), most chaste & most pure. > It is beyond my power to describe his status, I am tongue- tied & the expression falls short thus! A sacred tract of land in India, Ucha in word & letter, Has became graceful by the cleanliness of his sepulchre. > He got benifited from every spiritual lineage, But expressed Suharwardi & Chesti more and became its source & sage.

We found the signs of his belovedness from his travel and trip, Because many of his revelations were disclosed before his worship. Conscious of breathing in loneliness and company, A nourisher in company and isolation wa he! To be conscious is to visualize GOD always and ever, For his inner eye is bestowed with eyesight to look before and after. He is a mystic, aware of his secrets , hidden and obvious, Nothing is a hinderance to it even if in excess. His company favours the devotees with tranquility and peace of mind, A great wall of china to the penitents, his allegiance, very kind. He has got permission, since years , for guidance and allegiance, But hesitant in running a public kitchen and saintliness. He wanted more reproach, oblivion and self-annihilation, Though in the world of guidance, he has led a crowd of men. He accepted the penitence by the penitents true, A researcher who got an instruction for rememberance became an adarmant too. His recitals and learnings consisted of great and innumerable benedictions, He who got a permission is blessed by its repetitions. The sun of dominion of religious instruction is perfect, The imperfect is lost for his own fault like blind bat. Kashmir has been his birth place and residence too, The birth place of this sincere disciple has been the same country too! On you jinnee and men! Proclaim this evidence at every place , That this saint has been the disciple of that looking face.

He became the namesake of that famous conquerer in religion, The champion became more powerful in self mortification. Reading 'The people who strove ' he too attempted and strove , God led him the path, became a mentor over sea and land and so. He showed steadfastness in knowledge and action. God favoured him with inspired knowledge, became a nourisher of religion. God taught him, out of love, an inspired knowledge (ilm e ludni), He became a great scholar of the ALLAH'S Mysteries and image. For this reason, the twists of the incidents of the mystics, Became easier to him, the interpretation of tricks. The light of the quran was revealed to him and its secrets as well, He saw its virtues, its words to his memory fell. A helper in islamic sacred law, a jurist in spirituality, His heart became a source for the secrets of reality... *Baa riyaazat saakhta ilmulyaqeen ainulyaqeen Pas ham az haqulyaqeen az lutuf haq haq dar shud ast. Translation: He turned his convincing knowledge into positive by his worship, The favours of ALLAH,and the certainity of truth, made him easier to sip. *Dar riyaazat saal haa na nahaadah pahlu bar zameen Haaselash ein rutba shud chun azkuro as'har shudast Translation: He worshipped and did not not lay on the groundfor years together, He achieved this status when remembered GOD with care *Bood murge ruh o ra manzar tarash aashiyaan Pas ba dunya beqaraar az shoqe aa'n manzar shud ast. Translation: His soul's bird enjoyed the scene of GOD'S throne,his nest For the longing of that scene , he was never at rest. *A hawk flying in mysticism went to its original station, The flavours of GOD blessed him with wings and pinion. *The stages of body and self , and heart and soul and the secret, He traversed to the hidden and unknown stages with it. *He travelled to the world of angels and the dominion of heaven, His soul's bird to the mystic world beyond space and time was driven.

قصیدہ وردا حضرت سلطان شیخ حمزہ مخدومی کشمیری ؒ کے خلفاء میں سے ایک نامور خلیفہ ،جن کا اسم مبارک حضرت بابا داؤد خاکی ؒ ہے نے لکھا ہے ۔یہ قصیدہ شریف فارسی زبان میں منظوم ہے ۔اس میں ۴۴۰ اشعار ہیں ۔ اس قصیدہ شریف میں صاحب قصیدہ نے اپنے مرشد حضرت مخدوم شیخ حمزہ ؒکے باطنی و ظاہری احوال ، تصوف کے رموزقرب خدا وندی اور رضا ئے مصطفوی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم حاصل کرنے کے نادر نسخے بیان کئے ہیں ۔ یہ قصیدہ شریف پڑھنے سے اور اس پر عمل پیرا ہونے سے راہ مستقیم سے بھٹکے ہوئے راہی وصال حق کے مرتبے پر فائز ہوتے ہیں ۔
قصیدۂ وردالمرین کو باقی قصائد سے کچھ منفرد شان ہے ۔اوّل یہ کہ جب حضرت خاکی ؒ نے یہ قصیدہ نظم کیا ۔اس وقت ان کے مرشدِ کامل حیات تھے یعنی ان کی حین حیات میں ہی قصیدہ شریفلکھا گیا بلکہ حضرت محبوب العالم ؒ اکثر وبیشتراس قصیدہ شریف پر نظر ثانی فرماتے ۔ دوسری خصوصیت یہ کہ اس قصیدہ کی یہ بھی ایک خوبی ہے کہ صاحبِ قصیدہ نے بذات خود قصیدہ وردالمرین کی شرح ’’دستور السالکین‘‘ کے نام سے کی، جس سے اشعار کا حقیقی منشاء نثر میں ظاہرہوا۔اس طرح یہ دستاویز ہدایت نظم و نثر میں اپنا فیضان بکھیر رہی ہے مگر بقول شاعر ؎
ہم تو مائل بہ کرم ہیں کوئی سائل ہی نہیں
راہ دکھلائیں کسے راہروِ منزل ہی نہیں
اس قصیدہ کے نام ’’وردالمرین ‘‘سے ہی یہ بات سمجھ آرہی ہے کہ یہ مریدین کیلئے نسخۂ کیمیا ہے ۔یہ نام بھی خود محبوب العالم ؒ نے ہی اس قصیدہ کیلئے منتخب فرمایا جیسا کہ خاکی ؒ ایک شعر میں اس کا ذکریوں فرماتے ہیں ؎
مدح شیخ ایں نظم من وردالمرین نام یا فت
زانکہ وردش ساختن بر ہر مرید اجدر شداست
علامہ خاکی ؒ اس قصیدہ کے نظم کرنے کے بارے میں فرماتے ہیں کہ میں نے ماہ صیام میں اپنے پیر برحقؒ کے حکم سے خلوت اختیار کی اور عبادت میںمحو ہوا ۔ دورانِ عبادت مجھے یہ خیال آیا کہ ایک قصیدہ لکھوں۔میں نے خیال آتے ہی قلم اُ ٹھایا توکم و بیش ۴۰ اشعار لکھ ڈالے ۔ایک روز حضرت محبوب العالمؒ نے مجھے بلاوا بھیجا ،میں حاضر خدمت ہوا تو آپ فرما نے لگے کہ خلوت میں کیا کرتے ہو میں نے یہ مسودہ ان کی طرف بڑھایا۔ حضرت محبوب العالم ؒ نے دیکھا اور فرمایا کہ میںنے رات ہی ایک خواب دیکھا جس میں ‘میں نے تجھے ایک باغ کو سینچتے دیکھا ۔اس قصیدہ کو مزید نظم کرو ،میرے خواب کی یہی تعبیر ہے۔یہی قصیدہ میرے مریدین کے ایمان، عقائد و اعمال کی حفاظت کرے گا یہی ’’ورد المردین‘‘ بنے گا۔
حضرت باباداؤد خاکیؒ نے اپنے مرشد ؒ کی زبان سے یہ الفاظ تحسین سنے اور قصیدہ مزید نظم کرنا شروع کیا ۔ اس بات کو حضرت بابا داؤدخاکیؒ نےقصیدہ شریف کے ایک شعر میں ہی ذکر کیا فرماتےہیں ؎
کاتب وقاری وسامع ہم بشارت یا فتنہ
آنکہ رحمت بر سرایں ہر سہ مسمطر شد است
قارئین کرام ! حضرت باباداؤد خاکیؒ کی جب حضرت سلطان العارفین شیخ حمزہ ؒ سے پہلی ملاقات ہوئی تو حضرت خاکی ؒ اس وقت ایک بہت بڑے عالم دین اور قاضی ٔ وقت تھے یعنی سب کچھ تھا ان کے پاس نہ تھا ،اطمینانِ قلب کے سوا ،لیکن حضرت پیر کے ساتھ پہلی ہی ملاقات میں حضرت پیر کی ایک ہی نظر نے حضرت خاکی ؒ کے دل کی دنیا ہی بدل ڈالی ہلچل اور بے اطمینانی ختم ہوئی ،دل کا قرار اور روحانی اطمینان حاصل ہوا ۔ اس پیر برحق کی اس کرامت کا ذکر حضرت خاکیؒ قصیدہ کے پہلے ہی شعر میں خدائے تعالیٰ کا شکرادا کرتے ہوئے یوں کہتے ہیں؎
شکر ﷲ حالِ من ہر لحظ نیک وتر شداست
شیخ شیخیاں شیخ حمزہ ؒ تامرا رہبر شداست
حضرت باباداؤد خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں کہ میرے پیر حضرت شیخ حمزہ ؒ کو ا للہ تعالیٰ نے عارفوں کا سلطان بنایا ہے کیونکہ پیر برحق نے قرآنِ پاک کو اپنے قلب وروح میں اُتارا اور اتباع رسول صلعم میں کا مل تھے اﷲ تعالیٰ نے ایسے لوگوں سے یوں وعدہ فرمایا ہے ’’ہم اس کو اپنی طرف راہ دیتے ہیں جو ہماری راہ میں دن رات جد وجہد کرے ‘‘۔ حضرت سلطان ؒ اس آیت مبارکہ کے زندہ وجاوید نمونہ تھے اس لئے اﷲ تعالیٰ نے پیر برحق کو خشکیاور تری کا مالک بنایا تھا حضرت باباداؤد خاکیؒ اپنے قصیدہ کے اس شعر میں یہ بات فرمارہے ہیں ؎
والذین جاھد واخواندہ چوں سعی وجھد کرد
حق نمودش راہ چوں ہادی بحر وبر شد است
اﷲ تعالی نے دین کی خاطر جد وجہد کے بعد کا میابی حاصل کرنے کیلئے استقامت شرط قرار دی ہے ۔ حضرت سلطان العارفینؒ کے بارے میں حضرت خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں کہ جو کچھ میرے پیر برحق نے علم حاصل کیا اس علم کے مطابق عمل بھی کرتے رہے اور استقامت بھی اختیار کی تو اﷲ تعالیٰ نے آپ ؒ کو رفیع و اعلیٰ درجات پر فائز فرمایا۔ اس بات کا اظہار حضرت خاکیؒ نے قصیدہ وردالمریدین میں اس طرح کیا ہے ؎
استقامت چوں نمود اندر عمل در ماعلم
علم مالم یعلمش حق دادودین پر ور شد است
خدا تعالیٰ کا قرب اور رسول برحق صلعم کی رضا حاصل کرنے کیلئے شریعت مطہرہ پر عمل لازم ہے ۔قانونِ خدا وندی کا جاننا شریعت کہلاتا ہے اور اس قانون کو اپنی زندگی میں اپنا نا طریقت کہلاتا ہے۔جبراہ خدا پر چلنے والا سالک قانون کی جانکاری حاصلکرکے اس کو اپنی زندگی میں اپنا تا بھی ہے تووہ حقیقت تک پہنچتا ہے۔ حضرت خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں کہ میرے پیر ؒ شریعت وطریقت سے ہوتے ہوئے حقیقت تک پہنچ چکا تھا ؎
اوشریعت راست ناصردر طریقت مجتہد
بہر اسرار حقیقت صدر او مصدرشداست
حضرت سلطان العارفین ؒ اتباع شریعت کے شہسوار تھے اور طریقت کے مجاہد جو فقط حقیقت تک ہی نہ پہنچے بلکہ ان کا سینۂ مبارک حقیقت کے رموزکا خزانہ بن گیا جن کو وہ ہروقت اپنے مریدین اور سالکین میں تقسیم فرماتے تھے۔
حضرت سلطان العارفینؒ سے منسوب ایک خزقِ عادت واقعہ کو حضرت باباواؤد خاکیؒ اس شعر میں بیانکرتے ہیں ۔بہر تادیب یکی نوکر کہ اندر شہر بود
مشت زداز نادِ ہل واقع بر آں نوکر شد است
حضرت باباداؤد خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں کہ مرشد پاک ؒ نے فرمایا کہ دیندار لوگوں اور دین کی محبت ہر مسلمان پر فرض ہے اورجنت کی چابی ہے کیونکہ دین اوردینداروں سے اﷲ محبت کرتا ہے اسی طرح دنیا کی محبت اور جاہ پرستی سے دور رہو کیونکہ اس میں مسلمانوں کا نقصان اور خسار ہ ہے حضرت خاکیؒ یوں فرماتے ہیں ؎
حبِ دینداران ودین فرض و کلیدِ جنت است
حبِ اموال است مارو حب جاہ اژدر شداست
حضرت محبوب العالم ؒ کا گھرانہ، آباؤ اجداد سب راسخ العقیدہ مسلمان تھے ۔آپ کے والد صاحب نے اپنے لائق وفائق فرزند کوتجر شریف سوپور سے سرینگر تعلیم حاصل کرنے کیلئے لایا تو اس وقت شیخ الاسلام بابا فتح اﷲ صاحب خانقاہ شمسی چک میں درس دیتے تھے۔ حضرت شیخ حمزہ ؒ کے والد نے اس خانقاہ میں ان کوتعلیم وتربیت کیلئے ڈالا۔ حضرت شیخ حمزہ ؒ تعلیم حاصل کرنے لگے تو دورانِ تعلیم و تربیت ہی ایک اور کرامت کا صدور آنجناب سے ہوا ۔ اس واقعہ کا ذکر حضرت خاکیؒ نے اس شعر میں کیا ہے ؎
مصطفی ؐ راہم مع الا صحاب دیدہ بارہا
زاں سبب درمذہب ِسُنیہ راسخ تر شد است
حضرت بابا داؤد خاکیؒ اپنے پیربر حق کے سلسلہ سہروردیہ کے بارے میں کہتے ہیں یہ ایسا سلسلہ ہےکہ اس کے ساتھ متعلق ہوکر آدمی کی کامیابی ضروی اور لازمی ہے کیونکہ اس سلسلئہ مبارکہ کے مرشد اعظم شاہ ولایت حضرت علی مرتضیٰ کرم اﷲ وجہہ ہیں۔ اس بات کو حضرت خاکیؒ نے اس طرح نظم کیا ہے۔ فرماتے ہیں ؎
غم نباید خورد مارا روز حشر از تشنگی
منبع ایں سلسلہ چوں ساقیٔ کو ثر شداست
حضرت خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں حضرت پیر برحق کو معرفت و حقیقت کے اسرار کی تہہ اور گہرائی میںپہنچنے کیلئے حضرت ولی تراش ابو الجناب شیخ نجم الدین کبریٰؒ نے بھی کشف اور اپنی تعلیماتکے ذریعہ رہنمائی فرمائی ۔ علم سلوک میں حضرت شیخ کبریٰ نے جو دس اصول طے کئے آپ ؒ ان پر استقامت کے ساتھ قائم رہے ۔وہ دس اصول یہ ہیں حضرت خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں ؎
توبہ و زہد و توکل ہم قناعت خلق خوش
کردہ و در عزلت از توفیق حق اذکر شد است
د ر توجہ رو نہادہ صبر را صابر شد است
در مراقب ثابت و اندر رضا مشکر شد است
وہ دس اُصول یہ ہیں(۱) توبہ کرنا (۲) دنیا سے بے رغتی اختیار کرنا (۳)خدا تعالیٰ پر مکمل بھر وسہ کرنا (۴) قناعت کر نا(۵) خوش خلقی اختیار کرنا(۶) خلوت نشینی کو پسند کرنا (۷) خدا تعالیٰ کی طرفہمہ تن متوجہ ہونا ( ۸) مصیبتوں اور محنتوں پر صبرکرنا(۹) مراقبہ میں ثابت قدم رہنا(۱۰) حکم اور قضائے الٰہی پر شکر و سیاس کیساتھ خوش اور راضی ہونا۔
حضرت خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت سلطان ؒ مسلمانوں کو جن شیطانوں اور انسان شیطانوں سے محفوظ رہنے کیلئے اوراد شریف بعد فجر کے علاوہ بعد عشائ(خفتن) نماز پڑھنے کی تلقین کرتے تھے اور فرماتے تھے کہ یہ ورد دوستان خدا ، ملائیکتہ اﷲ کا وظیفہ و ورد ہے ۔ جیساکہ خاکیؒ فرماتے ہیں۔
بعد ِ خفتن ہم بخوان اَوراد فتحیہ بصدق
بامر یداں زِاو لیاش ایں امرہم یکمر شداست
الغرض قصیدہ ’’وردالمرین ‘‘شریف برکتوں ، رحمتوں اور مغفرت کا بہترین نسخہ ہے ہر مسلمان کو چاہئے کہ قصیدہ شریف ورد المرین کا مطالعہ کرے اس قصیدے کے تراجم بھی بازار سے دستیاب ہیں۔
اس کے آخری شعر میں حضرت بابا داؤد خاکیؒ اپنے پیر سے عرض کرتے ہیں کہ اے میرے پیر برحق! میرے حال پر اپنی ایک نظر کرم فرمائیے وہی نظر کرم کیجئے تاکہ میں بھی مقرب ہوجاؤں ؎
یک نظر بر حال زار خاکی ٔؔ بے چارہ کن
زاںنظر ہائے کہ خاک تیرہ زاں چوں زر شداست
اﷲ تعالیٰ سب مسلمانوں کو اپنے اولیاء کرام کی تعلیمات و طریقوں پر ہی چلنے کی توفیق عطا فرمائے ۔ (آمین)
